May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit – Romans 15:13

A couple mornings ago I found myself going to go eat donuts with my fellow pledge brothers Baron and Scott. As we started devouring our delicious, amazing, wonderful donuts I made a joke saying, “You know, God’s love is like a donut.” I said it as a joke, but the more I thought about it, God’s love really is like a donut.

I think we all can agree that there isn’t much that can fill you up like a hot donut. Like a donut, Jesus’s love fills our lives with purpose and joy. As I write this I can’t help but think of the story of Jesus healing the paraplegic man. This man had been a paraplegic for his entire life and had probably searched for any cure he could find, but nothing could help him; that is until he met Jesus. Jesus said to the man, “Which is easier: to say your sins are forgiven or to say, get up and walk? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins, get up, take your mat and go home.” Then the man got up and went home and the crowds were amazed.

Just like the paraplegic man, people search for things to fill them up, but nothing can fill a person up and give their life meaning like having a relationship with Jesus. Jesus tells us that a relationship with him won’t always be easy, but he promises that through him we will be fulfilled and be full of joy. To finish up I will end with a quote from Lewis Black, a famous comedian. “If you stop eating donuts you will live three years longer, but it’s just three more years that you’ll want a donut.” You can try a lot of things to fill you up, but in the long haul nothing will fulfill your life like a relationship with Jesus.
