“Does not my word burn like fire?” Says the Lord. “Is it not like mighty hammer that smashes a tock to pieces?” – Jeremiah 23:29
For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.- Romans 8:13
Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. – Ephesians 6:17
The Bible is an awesome tool that we have been blessed with. It is God’s word and direction to us. It can calm fears and convict heavy hearts. When Paul says to put to death the deeds of the body “by the Spirit” (Romans 8:13), I take him to mean that we should use the one weapon in the Spirit’s armor that is used to kill, the sword. Which is the word of God. So when the body is about to fall into temptation, we are to pull out the word of God like a sword and kill our temptation.
For example, when I begin to feel temptation to lust after a woman I pull out the scripture Galatians 5:16. I start saying to myself over and over again, “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not grateful the desires of the flesh.” Having promises at hand when facing temptation is one key to successful warfare against sin.
